Servant leadership happens when we act with respect, care, and fairness for the well-being of all involved, and not for our own self-serving interests. When we serve first and lead second, we help individuals and organizations achieve worthwhile results while keeping the best interest of those we serve before our own. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power and puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.
