Training for scientists and researchers who want to present complex material in an accessible and inspiring way.

Scientific research serves as the foundation for knowledge development, but its impact is only realized when its findings are successfully communicated. This is especially true beyond one's own field, such as at conferences, interdisciplinary seminars, and within multidisciplinary research consortia. Some knowledge must even transcend the boundaries of the scientific arena to ensure that recommendations and best practices find their way into society. However, this presents a challenge for many scientists: how can you effectively present your insights to those outside their niche, such as politicians, business leaders, or social organizations?

This program offers a way to discover the secrets of effective presentations for different audiences and to learn how to make your research resonate both within and outside your field. You will learn how to captivate a room full of non-specialists with your research results and encourage them to look beyond their own disciplines. This will enable them to listen attentively during your presentation and ask interested questions afterward. When this happens, interesting connections can be made, innovative research can be initiated, and scientific breakthroughs can be achieved. In short, you will learn how to present science with impact.

This requires a well-structured story, one that is interesting, surprising, or even exciting to your audience. You must know how to make your story relevant to them while being aware of your own goals. You must also be able to connect with your audience, make them willing and curious, and be able to play with their expectations and entice them to interact.

During this open training, presented by Marloes ten Kate, a presentation coach, biologist, presenter, and former science journalist, you will learn these and other techniques for presenting science with impact. Marloes is a co-founder of Scientific Storytelling, where she trains scientists in the art of telling a comprehensible and captivating story. She has worked as a science journalist and presenter for national radio and television programs and has trained hundreds of (international) researchers as a presentation coach in the techniques required to prepare and deliver effective presentations.

Program summary:

Day 1 (morning + afternoon): Compose your story

Based on your own case, you compose your own impactful story:

• Structure: make your story coherent, clear, and understandable;
• Engagement: attract attention and create a suspenseful narrative
• Relevance: make your story relevant to your audience.

Preparation for day 2: Prepare your presentation: create the slides and know the content of your story.

Day 2 (half-day): Present with confidence

With Marloes, you will work on your personal presentation style, make effective use of your qualities as a speaker, and work on your voice and posture. You will learn to establish and maintain contact with your audience and effectively engage with them. You will learn how to tell your story in a relaxed, purposeful, and self-confident manner.
