Module B02; Shielding failure of overhead lines. This module teaches about the risk of a shielding failure and a resulting flashover of an insulator as a result of a direct strike to the phase wire of an overhead line.

Two output parameters are of interest here: the Shielding Failure Rate (SFR) and Shielding Failure Flash-Over Rate (SFFOR). There are different methods to calculate them.  The Electro-Geometric Model (EGM) is the most commonly used method. Many literature is referring to this calculation method to determine the lightning performance of high voltage overhead lines, preventing a lightning to strike directly to the phase wires. However, this method has limitations and is not recommended for high tower structures for EHV or UHV transmission. For this the use of a Leader Progression Model (LPM) is popular. Since LPM can be quite complex, a simplified method was described in Cigre’s Technical Brocure 839, following the recommendations of Dr. Rizk.

Tools: two excel tools will become available; A graphical calculation method (EGM) and the basic calculation method (LPM – Rizk). Prerequisites for the use of the tools: a recent version of MS Office Excel shall be used with the option to run VBA macro’s. You will need to run these tools to complete the course. If the user wants to extend or change the tool experience with Excel and VBA will be necessary.
