Over the last 20 years, Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metals such as Powder Bed Laser Fusion (PBLF) has gained an increasingly amount of attention from a largely diversified group of research institutes and industrial end-users. Enabling factors for this development are the ability to exploit the increased complexity over conventional manufacturing methods, while diminishing the need for expensive tooling. The extended possibilities in freedom of design, however, render expertise in the design for additive manufactured parts indispensable. This course is the follow-up of the Additive Manufacturing State of Art course.

Course material

What will you learn in this Additive Manufacturing course?

On completion of the course, you have a deep insight into the production surrounding of Additive Manufacturing. It’s a hands-on training with leading software solutions for data preparation. These solutions cover the complete process chain, from converting a generated STL file input to the sliced supported machine data file. In addition, starting and depacking of a metal AM process is offered to learn about the complete workflow of AM processes.

The course is mainly meant for designers, manufacturers, product engineers and project leaders who design products or parts.

The Certificate of attendance of Course 1 is obligatory to join the course.

2 days State of the art + 3 days Lab Experience, from 9.00 AM - 4.30 PM, once a week

Course material

An extensive English syllabus with images and brief texts. Because this field is continuously in development, the course material will be updated frequently to the latest state of technical affairs. The course will be given in English. Participants are invited to contribute their own developed parts to discuss them as a practical case study.

Practical session during the course

This course is organized in cooperation with Aconity3D and Xilloc. Day three will take place at Xilloc in Geelen. The fifth day will take place at Aconity3D in the laboratory of the Fraunhofer Research Institute in Aachen. This day consists of an interactive program.


Content

Day 1: State of the Art Additive Manufacturing and its Materials

  • Introduction of AM technologies and global developments.
  • In depth view of most important metal AM processes.
  • In depth view of common metal Materials for AM and their mechanical properties.
  • Identification of business cases and economic potential for AM.

Day 2: Process deep dive and Design for Additive Manufacturing

  • Introduction of most important Process Parameters.
  • Understand major process possibilities and restrictions.
  • Deducing of Design rules from acquired knowledge.
  • Interactive Design study on exemplified part.
  • Future prospects of AM.

Day 3: Day at Xilloc (Geleen)

  • Introduction in Polymer AM and its technologies.
  • Understand major process possibilities and restrictions.
  • Deducing of Design rules from acquired knowledge.
  • Guided tour through the Xilloc Factory.
  • Introduction of post processing possibilities and Quality assurance.
  • Understand the cost structure for polymer AM processes.
  • Future of Polymer AM processes.

Day 4: Software solutions and job preparation

  • Understanding the possibilities and limitations of the STL file format.
  • Get to know supporting Design tools: Topology Optimization.
  • Hands- On Software Training on market leading Software Magics.
  • Prepare individualized part for Lab Day.
  • Understand the cost structure for AM processes.

Day 5: Lab Day in Aachen

  • Preparing a metal AM job: Do’s and don’ts.
  • Start a job with self-prepared parts.
  • Guided Lab Tour Aconity3D and Fraunhofer Research Institute.
  • Introduction of post processing possibilities and Quality assurance.
  • Unpacking your own manufactured part.

All participants will be granted a free trial version of Magics 19 and 3-matic STL provided by Materialise over the lengths of the AM Lab Experience training.
